designing for empathy: Aiga miami Posterfest 2019 workshop

Today, Miami has the highest new infection rate per capita in the U.S. with approximately 26,110 people living with HIV, and that number is growing. The Department of Health (DOH) works with artists, designers, and other creative disciplines to take a multi-faceted approach to HIV education and prevention. They wanted to collaborate with AIGA Miami and the Wolfsonian on a campaign to educate the public about the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Florida. Designers would be able to draw inspiration from historic AIDS awareness posters in The Wolfsonian’s collection and learn from the Florida Department of Health HIV Prevention team about modern-day issues and experiences.

Former AIGA President, Rebecca White, invited me to facilitate a workshop as part of the AIGA Design for Good initiative with the goal of creating awareness around South Florida’s HIV/AIDA Crisis while providing designers insight into the process of human-centered design.

Planning the Workshop

To ensure that we were designing with real people in mind we interviewed representatives from the DOH to develop four distinct personas we would bring to the workshop for attendees to gain insight on the audience they were designing for.

The half-day workshop agenda was meant to provide context to our attendees and immerse them in the topic before getting into creating solutions. The workshop outcome would only be to sketch concepts as they absorbed the information of the day, reinforcing that the practice of design cannot be condensed into a half day.

When it came time to sketch ideas for posters, we asked each person to choose a situation in which the person would be when engaging with the piece and the emotion they were addressing or trying to evoke from the viewers. Providing context to the designs, created an opportunity for the attendees to frame the problem with their audience at the center.
